Functional principle

Before tightening
The lower part E of the body is in contact with the
fitting area.
The upper part A (whose function is similar to that
of an elastic conical washer) maintains ist conical
shape.
The threaded part C is much still shorter  than the
nut body.

Due to the tightening torque, the nut deforms itself
elastically in two directions:

Depending on these two forces to each other, the
nut has the effect like a spring.

Serpress

®

is a self-locking nut, thanks to the axial

and radial elasticity prevents it unscrewing as a
result of virbation. The parts screwed together
remain permanently fastened.

Loads / Torques

In the illustrations here, the values of the load and
the corresponding tightening torques within which
limits the Serpress

®

nut must be used.

These values have been determined as follows:
galvanised nuts, passivated with zinc chromate,
cleaned and deburred; galvanised screws, class
8.8, tolerance 6G, fitted area, slightly lubricated,
hardness 60 – 62 HRC.

These are guidelines which depend largely on the
condition of the seat of the nut and the cleanness
of the nut and screw threads.

Since the Serpress

®

nut has a larger friction area

than a standard nut, a tightening torque must be
used which is 15 – 20 % higher than for a standard
nut, so that for the same application the same
screw tension can be achieved.

Elastic linear expansion
In the comparison between a normal nut and a
Serpress

®

nut the Serpress

®

nut displays a far

greater residual elasticity and thus guarantees a
self-locking connection.

Due to its elasticity, the Serpress

®

nut increases

the usable length of the bolt considerably and
permits an elastic linear expansion which would
otherwise only be achieved with a much longer
screw and thus guarantees perfect assembly.

Vibration behaviour
If a traditional nut-and-screw connection is subjec-
ted to vibrations, these are transmitted directly
along F1 to the underside of the screw thread, since
the upper surface of the threads are not in contact
with the threads of the nut. The vibrations thus
transmitted can lead to the bolted connection
becoming loosened.

With the elastic Serpress

®

nut, due to the spring

effect the force F is transmitted direct to the bolt
thread which is engaged.

The upper part acts like a shock-absorber.

n

There is contact on both sides of the thread

flanks of both nut and bolt.

Stress concentration
Detailed examinations and practical experience
have revealed that in bolted connections the majori-
ty of the forces arising are borne by the first and
second turns of thread. This means that dangerous
concentrations of stress can arise.

With the Serpress

®

nut working under ideal condi-

tions, a uniform distribution of the forces is guaran-
teed over all the thread turns. Fatigue of the bolt is
reduced and stress concentration is avoided.

Bearing Surface
In applications connected with soft materials
(aluminium, brass, copper etc.), standard nuts
apply high pressures to the locating surface C,
which tends to displace material against the
thread of the screw.

Due to the larger be aring surface of the Serpress

®

nut, the imposed pressure is better distributed. In
addition, on the Serpress

®

nut the bearing surface

C is further away from the the edge of the drilled
hole, so that there is no material  displacement
from the edge of the hole to the bolt threads.
